Book Review: "A Praying Life: Connecting with God In A Distracting World"

by Greg Smith on June 22nd, 2011

I read a lot of books... I really do. I find great joy in recommending a good book that can help inform a person, educate a person, train a person, encourage a person, and so on. I think it is a result of being a beneficiary of someone extending that same gift to me.

So, my goal then is to extend this to you; a review of a book that I am finding extremely beneficial so that you can benefit as well. It may be once a month, maybe every two weeks, maybe once a week, (remember I read a lot of books)...

I hope it will be beneficial for you. Enjoy!

This book took on a life of its own for me. It was recommended in passing to me as a good book about prayer and also about walking in Christ. I later happened to see it on a website, where I buy most of my books, on sale; I decided to purchase it. I got it, brought it with me to bed to thumb through and get a general feeling of the book and where it was going before I went to sleep... an hour later and 8 chapters down, my eyes hurt but my mind and heart were in full gear. I was hooked.

This book is unique in that Miller takes a subject like prayer, which can be written for the top-shelf and theologically seasoned Christian reader, and brings it down to read almost like a good novel not sacrificing theological robustness for the layperson or relevant application for others. Miller writes in such conversational ways that you are drawn into the story line often forgetting that it is a book about a particular subject like prayer. While this can be a negative, Miller does it extremely well weaving his life experiences with his daughter Kim who has autism, his struggle with pride, his other daughter’s misunderstanding of the power of prayer, his misunderstanding of the power of prayer, marriage struggles, ministry struggles, and directs and guides the reader into the deep parts of their soul and challenges them to pray and walk with Christ harder and deeper.

If you are looking for a great summer read, start here. It will help you in enormous ways with how you talk with God, walk with God, delight in God, run to God, and so much more!
