9780875526003If you were to ask a group of people what are some of the biggest issues or problems they face on a daily basis, you would probably get a large sampling of fears, emotions, and concerns. Though the answers you got may seem to you like unrelated problems, if you looked closely enough, you may start to see some connections; you may see that a lot of them are really just a few key issues. The book, “When People Are Big and God Is Small” addresses three big issues and/or fears we all deal with on a daily basis: peer pressure, codependency, and the fear of man. If you just read those and think you are not affected by them, pick up the book and think again

Edward T. Welch, a counselor, director of counseling and academic dean at CCEF (Christian Counseling and Education Foundation) as well as professor at Westminster Theological Seminary, brings to the table some major issues that we as living, breathing, thinking, and feeling humans experience in a plethora of relationships each day. Welch explains that codependency has been the "term" for the past few years with massive amounts of books written on it. Welch calls the result of that fruit people with, "love tanks with a leak"(I won't spoil the fun of finding out what that means!)

Welch takes a Biblical look at codependency and peer pressure to shows its roots in the main issue of, "fear of man". Proverbs 29:25 says, "Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe." Welch helps the reader take a freeing look at their life to see where codependency, peer pressure, or really fear of man is ruling their life and finding their identity and comfort in God.

Welch walks the reader through the issues and helps the reader see that when people become big in their life, God becomes small... and that is one big problem! If fear of man is a snare, then, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Prov 9:10

If you know someone who deals with these issues or you deal with them yourself (we all do!), make sure you pick up this book. You will be glad you did!
